Training outside the public practice (TOPP)

Training outside the public practice, or TOPP as it has become known, was established in 1997 by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). TOPP is an alternative route to qualify as a chartered accountant. The traditional route is to complete articles at an accounting firm. SAICA recognised that many chartered accountants qualify and then leave the accounting profession to enter a more general business role in various industries and sectors. When completing TOPP, candidate chartered accountants study various programmes in general businesses under supervision.

STANLIB has been running a TOPP Programme for 8 xx years (in conjunction with Liberty). TOPP provides candidates with a wide range of investment experience, and they not only are exposed to the leading investment thinking and practices, but also gain general business experience in the day-to-day activities of a large company.
